Many people believe an air embolism, can happen very quickly and easily. An air embolism is when an amount of air is put into your blood stream typically through use of a syringe or IV. Many believe that even the smallest amount of air put into your blood stream can be fatal or near fatal. When in fact this is incorrect. An air embolism takes place after a large amount of air is put into your blood stream, approx. 20 cc’s is needed to be fatal to you. Tiny air bubbles in a syringe or IV tube are no cause for concern. Air in a syringe when injecting into a muscle is absolutely safe, the only reason MD’s will squirt out the small amount of air, is to ensure that they are using the exact amount of that particular medication. Unless your doctor is a cold blooded killer, then there is no reason to be concerned that they will make a mistake large enough to be fatal, in the context of air embolisms of course.
