Picture Fixer!

29 Mar

Back in the day, I wrote this code out of applescript. I developed a really easy to use application that quickly enhanced your photos, automatically. I used a Quartz Composition for it, so its really fast – but if pretty effective. Now of course, you can do this with just about an image editor out there no problem, but I just wanted something quick and easy.

Ok, so now for the real blog post =)

Everyone’s been there, they are in the middle of a heated debate with your friends, someone from your hate list, or some fellow podcasters and you are starting to make a point, and getting it through to them. When all of a sudden Skype crashes and your disconnected from the call.. don’t you hate that? I certainly do, that’s why I decided to write out some info on what you can do – to help avoid this.

1. Keep your e-mail closed! E-mails are like downloading files, they run in the background and take of precious memory, and download speed.

2. We all do it, while listening to the annoying person in the Skype call. We open up our web browsers and watch a few useless YouTube tutorials, created by some guy in his basement, while drunk. Don’t! Its just like e-mails, its slows your download speeds down a LOT! If hes really that annoying, then use the famous tool called *mute*.

3. I know, I know you are a geek and you keep 40 apps open at once. I do to! (join the club) but seriously, do you really need to have every single web development tool, programming app, graphic design program, along with two web browsers, all while uploading some files using FTP? Also do you really need to do a screencast of you and your friends audio level going up and down? Well yeah, you do. But try not to! :)

4. If your on a Mac use activity monitor to close down any applications running in the background. If your on that thing we call “Windows” sigh.. then use TaskManager and see if you cant close down a few apps without them going “Not Responding” or having a “Fatal Error!” or getting that fun blue screen, and cant forget a few drivers messing up, and having your LCD go wacky, and make you need to boot into SafeMode.

5. Use Ethernet! don’t use wireless. Especially if your recording a podcast. Using wireless would be what we in the bizz’ call “Pulling a Joey” (Joey is going to hate me.)

Notes:

- Joey, please send all hate mail directly to. ihatebrandon@brandonanderson.org (Whats sad, is the fact that – that is a real e-mail address.)
- getrichsuperfact.com – is a random domain I came up with, and I have no idea what it is.
- Leave some comments! Tell me what you do, to help your Skype Life.
- I dod nit edit this post! its 4 aM, ind I dint feewl like it. If your reaalyi upsset, emails thea bafoore stited emaiil addess’ss. Twanks!

Choosing the right CMS

28 Mar

How do I choose the right CMS, to suit my needs?

Lets start by defining what a CMS is exactly, a CMS (Content Management System) is a web development product that allows you to separate content, from design of a website. CMS software are commonly free (genuinely free, no charge what so ever) and open source. However some commercial CMS systems are on the market. At current there are three very popular CMS systems those being, Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal. First I will make it clear of these three CMS’s are most used for, and which ones will best suit particular needs.

Wordpress is typically used for personal/professional blogs, using Wordpress.com you can have a free wordpress account and website. On a wordpress.com sub-domain. For example: nickssuperduperblog.wordpress.com. Wordpress is more user friendly and less tech savvy users. You can find many free Wordpress Themes, free, and premium (for charge).

Drupal is a more powerful CMS, more commonly used by do-it tinkerers and people who want to do it themselves, from content to design. Drupal supports what are referred to as modules. Modules allow you to extend to power and uses of Drupal. You can find many free themes for Drupal, however many are low quality. Its better to develop or have them developed your self.

Joomla is a very powerful CMS, that has many free high quality themes that are more close to the quality and amount of themes of Wordpress. Joomla can power everything from a corporate website, to a social network.

Some things to keep in mind when choosing a CMS:

Your skills, are you a web-uber-geek? Or an average user that is willing to learn?
What are your needs? Do you need user accounts on your website? Do you want other users to be able to post content and not allow users to create accounts?
Are you able to design your theme yourself or hire someone? If not, it may be wise to go with Joomla, or Wordpress.
